“We purchased our family’s farm from my father’s estate. Built in the 1800s, it’s been in our family since the 40s. We were extremely sensitive about the type of materials used and the overall aesthetic of the restoration. Our goal was to use materials that would have been employed during the original construction, so a lot of stone, wood, etc. We really wanted to incorporate a wood fired oven into the farm kitchen that was respectful of our goal. After a long search, we discovered the Le Panyol and started a dialogue with Maine Wood Heat. They “got it” and were extremely proactive in helping us achieve our vision. They even provided us with a customized layout to install the oven into a corner and assisted us with the installation. Further, they offered advice and recommendations related to incorporating recovered bricks from an old brewery (originally fired in the 1800s) along with stone gathered from our creek bed. We couldn’t be more happy with the result. In the wintertime, we keep a fire going 24/7. Along with being beautiful (if not romantic), it offers a comfortable source for ambient heat. We primarily use the oven to reheat food, cook meals, and my favorite, make breakfast. (Insert my wife’s eyes rolling here). I figure it’s the fastest toaster on the planet. Our most memorable meal in the oven was our Thanksgiving turkey. It turned out wonderfully. Make-your-own-pizza parties have also proven to be a hit. I highly recommend the oven and I recommend Maine Wood Heat to guide you along the way. Enjoy!” —Art Christensen

~DIY/All-Masonry Residential Sized Oven~

With this DIY core kit option, we supply the materials for you to build an oven core (ie the “guts” of a wood fired oven). This is a great option for those who have a local mason in mind to help them with their project OR for those skilled in masonry DIY and wanting to manage the oven build themselves. Please note that assembling the oven core is only part of the construction. Keep in mind that with this route, before the oven can be used, you will also need:

  • to build a base for the the oven
  • appropriately insulate the oven
  • cover the oven with a veneer (weatherproof if the oven is outside, and you’ll need to create a roof as well)
  • add a chimney

This oven core (only) option contains the dry stack clay components of the oven core, a bag of mortar and a Le Panyol insulated door. Therefore, we highly recommend you also consider getting one of our insulating packages to accompany your oven build project. Package include high performance insulating materials which are not easily found at local masonry yards. See below for additional information on our essential insulating materials packages.
