Last Spring, I learned how to make wood fired artisan French bread from Michael & Sandy Jubinsky at their school, Stone Turtle Baking & Cooking, in Lyman, Maine. In the first few minutes of class, it was clear I was in the company of not only great knowledge and skill, but also great love. Michael and Sandy were clearly passionate about the art and science of baking, and of each other. They worked together seamlessly, as if extensions of one another, or in my favorite words of Forest Gump, “Like peas and carrots.”

To kick off the holidays, we’d like to celebrate with some very exciting news we just received from Michael & Sandy. Turns out, there are many who recognize their greatness. This year, Michael was featured in the highly acclaimed Dessert Professional Magazine as one of the Top 10 Bread Bakers in America. Click here to read the full article and join us in congratulating Michael & Sandy for their remarkable achievement.

Thanks for stopping in. As you can see, things look a little different here at www.mainewoodheat.com. Don’t worry, you came to the right place.

We hope you like our new look and, even more, hope it’s easy to find exactly what you’re looking for. We decided to revamp the Web site for many reasons, but most of all to better reflect who we are and what we do, offer more resources and ways of understanding our products, and to make ordering online easier and more streamlined for our customers. If you have any feedback you’d like to send along, please do. The site is a work in progress, and like our business, is constantly evolving.

Developing the new Web site was certainly a team effort, and we’d like to thank one of the masterminds behind the project, Julie Parenteau of My Pigs Fly Design. She helped turn our visions of the new Web site into a reality.

Despite the changes we’ve made online, we still remain pretty old fashioned when it comes to working with our customers. We still sketch designs on napkins during lunch meetings and always prefer sharing ideas next to a wood fire or over a slice of pizza.

Thanks again for checking in. We hope to hear from you soon.

Cheers!

Maine Wood Heat Co.

Today we heard from one of our most recent mobile oven clients about his experience traveling around this summer with his new Le Panyol mobile oven. Dan Woodruff, and business partner Matt Parrott, are serving up wood fired pies at special events, farmers markets, weddings and festivals in Western Michigan and are developing quite a following. Check them out on their newly launched Web site or Facebook page. We look forward to keeping an eye on this dynamic duo!

“We had the oven out at an event this Saturday. Our best yet!

I found myself thinking about how lucky we are to have your oven. In my backyard oven, pizzas cook very unevenly. I would burn the first few pizzas almost every time. I also had to make sure that the hearth temperature was down in the low to mid 700s or I would consistently burn pizzas. With your oven, I never burn pizzas. When we started the event this weekend, we wanted to get a lot of pizzas out quickly. We created a crescent style fire with the main fire being in the back and smaller fires crawling down the sides. We were pulling completely cooked and beautiful pizzas out of the oven in 45 seconds. I always thought 90 seconds was the quickest. Not in your oven. As you can see, we remain serious fans.”

Suffolk Downs saw its share of horsepower a few weeks ago as New England’s leading home and garden professionals arrived at the annual Boston Home Show.

We were invited by, and proud to team up with our partner, Joe Ventriglia of Terrascaping & Construction, an expert in designing and building masonry ovens, fireplaces and custom outdoor living spaces in homes and commercial estates across central Massachusetts. Hoping to light some fires with the locals and attendees, Scott and Joe showcased Le Panyol’s premier residential ovens, including the model 66 core package, the fully assembled Provence, and our own signature copper turnkey series.

A diverse group of show-goers kept the Le Panyol team busy with a wide range of wood fired oven questions. Happy with each day’s turnout, Joe and Scott were confident that their efforts to promote Le Panyol ovens had ignited the imaginations and interests of the food savvy attendees.

The show also hosted cooking demonstrations sponsored by “Boston’s Best” restaurant chefs, as well as free lectures for homeowners centered around the process of designing and building kitchens, baths and additions.

If you missed this event and would like to know more about Le Panyol ovens, Joe will be attending the New England Home Show also in Boston at the Seaport World Trade Center next weekend. Look for Terrascaping & Construction, and talk to Joe. Show specials on display models still apply!

Late one evening over the holidays, I received a call from a nice woman from Massachusetts who had read about us in Yankee Magazine.
Late one evening over the holidays, I received a call from a nice woman from Massachusetts who had read about us in Yankee Magazine. She was enamored with the concept of heating her small cottage with a Russian fireplace. It would be the heart of her small 800 square foot rustic retreat in the Berkshires. It was a pleasant conversation, and a wonderful surprise to hear about the write-up. In the mail the next day, we received a copy of the Jan/Feb 2011 issue, compliments of the managing editor.

Inside we found a short piece about the article, “What’s So Hot About a Russian Fireplace” which was featured in Yankee Magazine back in 1978. A story that, three decades ago, mentioned our very own Albie Barden, and his work designing and building these remarkable sources of heat throughout the world.

In a brief paragraph, Russian fireplaces are described by their highly efficient combustion, and traditional design concept that Albie, Cheryl and Scott have spent their lives studying and sharing with others. I especially enjoyed the mention of a Finnish immigrant living in Maine back in the 40’s who built his Finnish fireplace with fieldstone collected from his own land, a technique Albie recommends to many of his clients who have access to such a valuable natural resource. Albie met this man, Sam Jaakkola and saw two of Sam’s stone masonry heaters. Albie commented on Sam’s heaters in his very first Masonry Stove Guild Newsletter, dated March 2, 1978. Both Sam Jaakkola and Basilio Lepushenko were extremely helpful to Albie in getting his start in masonry heaters.

It was a timely article that, despite the busyness of holidays, made me stop and think. During a time of year that revolves so much around change – the change of season, the shorter days and colder nights, the New Year, a time when we feel the pressure to change even ourselves, declaring resolutions to live better, and be better – it’s certainly nice to sit back, slow down and appreciate the steadfast traditions our unique cultures and families have held true. For us, it’s as simple as enjoying the gentle sound of a crackling fire, the mesmerizing dance of its flames, the woodsy aroma, and the gentle radiant warmth of the masonry heaters that envelopes us with a sense of serenity, and comfort, and the feeling of being home.

All of us here at Maine Wood Heat Co. hope you and your families are together and keeping warm this season, and wish you all a joyful and prosperous New Year.
